On-Track Incident Hinders a Top-10 Performance in Las Vegas for Montoya
Las Vegas, Nev. (March 1, 2010) – Juan Pablo Montoya and the No. 42 Target team were hoping to rebound after a disappointing finish in California the week before. The No. 42 Chevrolet was strong in practice and had a solid qualifying position for the Shelby American Sunday afternoon. A chance meeting with teammate Jamie McMurray on lap 93 changed the fate of the team and forced the Target machine behind the wall for 17 laps. Montoya would return to the track and finish out the day in the 37th position.
The Target team continued their west coast swing in Sin City over the weekend. Montoya set the pace in the first practice session as he was posted as the fastest car out on the race track. He would later follow that up with the second fastest lap in final practice and a top-10 qualifying spot. When the green flag waved, Montoya encountered a few handling woes but was able to keep pace with the lead cars. After multiple pit stops, the No. 42 handling was under control and Montoya drove back into the top-10.
While running in the ninth position on lap 93, the No. 1 Chevrolet got loose going into the corner alongside of Montoya and his run would be cut short. The Target Chevrolet backed into the wall causing damage to the rear section of the race car. The crew worked quickly back in the garage to get Montoya back out on track and within 17 laps the No. 42 Target Chevrolet returned to the race action. At the end of the day the Target team would have to settle for a 37th-place finish.
Next up on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule is the Kolbalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The race will air live on FOX and radio stations affiliated with PRN at 1:00 pm (ET). |
