“Honestly, I was not a fan of the racing we put on today. What I told INDYCAR yesterday was that we shouldn’t be racing like this. This is full pack racing and sooner or later somebody is going to get hurt. We don’t need to be doing this. It was a hell of a show and we did what we needed to do. We had a good PPG Chevy. When Will (Power) crashed and Helio (Castroneves) crashed, for me the goal was to finish ahead of (Scott) Dixon and we did that. So it’s all good and everybody did a great job again.”
No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet – Juan Pablo Montoya
Laps Completed: 248/248
Laps Led: 16
Points Position: Leader (348 pts)
Recap: Juan Pablo Montoya recovered from handling issues early on to finish fourth in Saturday night’s Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway, retaining his lead in the Verizon IndyCar Series championship standings. It marked Montoya’s series-leading sixth top-five finish of the season. After briefly losing several positions over the opening laps of the race, Montoya climbed back inside the top five prior to a lap 84 caution period. After bringing the No. 2 Verizon Chevrolet down pit road for service he returned to the track in the lead. He held the top spot until lap 182 when Tony Kanaan was able to get around both he and teammate Helio Castroneves, who was running in the second position. As he overcame some handling challenges with the car, Montoya was able to keep his Chevy positioned in the top five for most of the remaining laps.
“We had a long day with the No. 2 Hawk Performance Chevy. We started with a bad qualifying effort, but we seemed to be in an okay position to dig ourselves out of the hole at one point. We were racing with (Ryan) Hunter-Reay and he finished fifth. It’s hard to race with some of the guys in the back of the pack. They are young and sometimes make moves like you aren’t even there when you are right beside them. So we ended up with two broken wings and a 14th-place finish.”
