Stremme 32nd in Coors Banquet Car at NNCS Road Course Debut in Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif. (June 24, 2007)-With only two NASCAR Busch Series road course starts under his belt coming into Infineon Raceway Sunday, Stremme kept a close eye on teammate and road course racing expert Juan Pablo Montoya. The tutelage paid off as Montoya went on to score his first NNCS win, while Stremme ran 17th until a stop for fuel on the final tour of the 110-lap contest sent him back to finish 32nd.

Stremme qualified 40th on the 1.99-mile circuit, and politely moved over at the start for the more experienced Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson who were starting at the rear of the field due to technical infractions. The courteous maneuver came back around for Stremme in the long run, as he found himself 17th in the Coors Banquet Dodge on the final lap. What looked to be a successful afternoon turned out to be a 32nd place result after fuel mileage bit the Coors Banquet team in the end. However Stremme ran all 110 laps and brought the team back its Dodge Avenger in one piece in the first ever road course race for the Car of Tomorrow.

The No. 40 team fell one position to 23rd in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup point standings.  The team is 115 markers out of the top-20, and 374 points away from the 12th position – the final transfer spot for the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup.  

Up next for Stremme and the Coors Light team is the Lenox Industrial Tools 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. The race will be broadcast Sunday, July 1, on TNT and MRN radio (1:00 p.m. ET).

DAVID STREMME: “My goal was just to learn as much as I could this weekend, and if we were to finish on the lead lap and get a top-20 or top-25 finish that would have been a win for us. Juan helped me out tremendously. I followed him in practice quite a bit and picked up his line as best I could. We only had 45 practice laps under our belt before the race so it’s always tough when you’re running against guys who have been here for 15 years or more. We had a top-20 finish in our sights but had to stop for fuel on the final lap. I think we’ll have some more confidence heading into Watkins Glen in a few months.

Juan Pablo Montoya and the Wrigleys Juicy Fruit® Dodge were involved in a lap 70 incident with Greg Biffle that sent them behind the wall for repairs at Daytona International Speedway. The No. 42 team fixed the damaged car and had it back out onto the track in just 24 laps. Montoya finished the Coke Zero 400 in the 38th position and dropped to 21st in the NASCAR Sprint Cup driver standings.

Juan Pablo Montoya and the Texaco/Havoline Dodge finished the rain-shortened race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the 32nd position on Sunday. Montoya and the No. 42 crew had one of the quickest cars of the weekend, but were marred in traffic, blocked in their pits on several occasions and had a late-race run in with the No. 18 car that led them to the disappointing 32nd-place finish.

JPM had a great result, despite the crash: I think we had a car to win. I just got screwed. ... After I got taken out, sixth was a great result. Everybody here at Chip Ganassi Racing is working hard, said Montoya, who was coming off back-to-back 38th-place finishes in the previous two races. We needed this. We needed a good finish. We didnt get the win, but we did get a good finish out of it. I had a lot of fun out there Sunday

After starting 21st due to a qualifying rainout, Juan Pablo Montoya battled loose conditions for 200 laps in his Big Red Dodge at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) and finished the event in the 38th position. The weekend began promising as Montoya and Crew Chief Brian Pattie were pleased with the first practice and optimistic about qualifying. The rain began falling...
