FONTANA, Calif. (August 31, 2008) – Juan Pablo Montoya finished 20th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race at Auto Club Speedway on Sunday evening. Montoya started the 250-lap event from the 23rd position before driving his No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge to a top-20 finish. He remains 21st in the NSCS driver standings with 11 races remaining on the 2008 schedule.
Montoya and the No. 42 crew were optimistic about the race after final practice on Saturday. The Texaco/Havoline Dodge was one of the most consistent cars on Saturday. When the green flag waved Sunday afternoon, Montoya told Crew Chief Brian Pattie the car was a little tight in the center but pretty good.
Montoya ran in the top 20 for the first 50 laps of the race and through two pit stops. The No. 42 crew adjusted on the car to try and fix the tight condition Montoya was feeling. He broke into the top 15 on lap 57, and after a pit stop on lap 70 worked his way into the top 10 on lap 77. Although the car was still tight, Montoya moved up to a race high of seventh on lap 80.
The team made its first green-flag pit stop of the night on lap 111 for tires and fuel. Montoya continued to run in the top 10 when NASCAR displayed the yellow flag on lap 145. He pitted for a chassis adjustment, tires and fuel on lap 147. Racing resumed on lap 153 with Montoya in 13th, one of only 20 cars remaining on the lead lap. He was blocked by a lapped car and slipped back to 15th while trying to maneuver through heavy traffic.
The team continued to adjust on the car, but it was still tight through the center of the corner. With 50 laps remaining in the race, Montoya was 19th. He worked his way back to 15th on lap 223, but fell back to 20th in the closing laps.
The team will race under the lights at Richmond International Raceway next Saturday. The Rock & Roll 400 is scheduled to go green at 7:30 p.m. ET with live coverage on ABC beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
