Juan Pablo Montoya Continues Eventful Testing Schedule in NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow at Talladega
TALLADEGA, Ala. (October 10, 2006) After posting an impressive third-place result in his ARCA debut at Talladega Superspeedway on Friday, Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) driver Juan Pablo Montoya stuck around after the weekend’s NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series action and turned laps in the Car of Tomorrow at the 2.66-mile track in preparation for next season.
NASCAR’s next generation stock car was on display in a strict testing session, which was guided by the sanctioning body. The purpose of the test, in which Montoya logged 194.18 miles (73 laps), was geared toward dialing in racing specifications for the Fall event in 2007, and ranged from testing aerodynamic packages, motors and gearing.
Although no official times were released from the test, Montoya gained some much needed experience in drafting with NEXTEL Cup Series regulars, and learned a lot.
“I thought the Car of Tomorrow was really good, and overall it behaved very well I thought,” said Montoya, who will assume driving duties of the No.42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge for CGRFS in 2007. “These cars are a bit different in the fact that they run a little closer than the ARCA cars do, but it’s also a lot more fun. There’s a lot of old dogs here that know all the tricks, so it continues to be a learning experience for me in terms of how to drive, how to pass and what to do. It’s very interesting for me to see how the car works, and how you can work with people around you. So now it’s on to Iowa next weekend.”
Juan Pablo Montoya will continue his stock car education next weekend in the ARCA RE/MAX Series event at the Rusty Wallace designed and owned Iowa Speedway. Montoya will pilot the No. 4 Texaco/Havoline Dodge for his second start in a stock car.
The Prairie Meadows 250 is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 15, and will air live on the Speed Channel.
